Mac Mini M6 vs. Minisforum MS-01: Which Mini PC Wins?

Our verdict: the Mac mini (M6) wins for most people, as a quiet daily desktop and creative machine. The Minisforum MS-01 wins for home servers and homelabs, thanks to upgradeable RAM, three SSD slots and dual 10G networking.

Apple's Mac mini and Minisforum's MS-01 are both small enough to hide behind a monitor, but they're built for opposite people. One is a sealed, silent appliance. The other is a tiny workstation you open up and fill with your own parts.

Local AI on the Mac mini runs on its unified memory; the MS-01 needs a half-height card or a USB4 GPU enclosure for serious models.

Mac mini (M6): the efficiency king

The M6 model packs a 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU, 16GB of unified memory and a dual 16-core Neural Engine into a 5-inch square box. Apple lists the M4 model it replaced at about 4 watts idle, so you can leave it on 24/7 and barely notice it on your bill.

Apple silicon pulls well ahead of Intel's 13th-gen mobile chips in single-thread speed and efficiency. The catch is that nothing is upgradeable. The 256GB base SSD is tight, and Apple charges $200 to go to 512GB at purchase.

MSMinisforum MS-01: the tinkerer's dream

The MS-01 puts function first. The i9-13900H has 14 cores (6P + 8E), and the box adds dual 2.5GbE, dual 10G SFP+, two USB4 ports, a half-height PCIe 4.0 slot and room for up to 96GB of DDR5.

Add NVMe drives and 64GB of RAM, install Proxmox, and you've got a home server that rivals a rack-mount setup at a fraction of the size. It's louder under heavy load and draws far more power than the Mac mini.

Price the MS-01 as built, not barebones: the $679 box has no RAM, SSD or OS. Minisforum's own 32GB and 1TB version is $1,279 on sale, so add your parts' cost before comparing it with the $899 Mac mini.

Who wins where

Daily driver and office work: Mac mini. It's silent, instant-on and sips power. Software development: it depends. iOS and Mac apps need Xcode, so that's the Mac mini. For Docker-heavy web work, the MS-01 runs containers natively on Linux with room for up to 96GB of RAM.

Content creation: Mac mini. Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro and a media engine that handles ProRes and ProRes RAW in hardware give it the edge. Local AI is split. The Mac mini runs smaller models well through MLX, while CUDA tools need the MS-01 with an NVIDIA card.

What about other mini PCs?

Mac mini M5 Pro ($1,699) starts at 24GB, goes up to 64GB and adds Thunderbolt 5, the creative-pro pick. ZimaBoard 2, from $339 on Zima's store, is an x86 single-board server for Docker and light self-hosting. ACEPC mini PCs cover basic Windows office use on a budget.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mac Mini M4 vs Minisforum MS-01: which wins?

The Mac mini wins on quiet operation, power efficiency and performance per watt. Apple replaced the M4 model with the M6 Mac mini in August 2026, now from $899. The Minisforum MS-01 wins on expandability: three NVMe slots, a PCIe slot, dual 10G SFP+ plus dual 2.5GbE, and up to 96GB of user-upgradeable RAM.

Is the Minisforum MS-01 better than the Mac Mini for developers?

For homelab work, virtualization and self-hosting, yes. The MS-01 has dual 10G SFP+ networking, three NVMe slots and runs Proxmox or any Linux distro. For macOS and iOS development, the Mac mini is faster in single-thread work, quieter and the only way to run Xcode.

What is the best mini PC for AI work in 2026?

For local inference without a discrete GPU, a Mac mini with more unified memory is the easy pick. The M6 model tops out at 32GB, and the M5 Pro model goes up to 64GB. For NVIDIA-specific AI workflows, the Minisforum MS-01 can take a half-height GPU in its PCIe slot or an external GPU over USB4.

Can a mini PC replace a workstation?

For most developers and creators, yes. A Mac mini with 32GB of memory and a 1TB SSD outperforms most desktops from a few years ago for compile-heavy or video editing work. Heavy 4K effects rendering, training large AI models or running many VMs at once still want a tower with a discrete GPU.

Power consumption: Mac Mini vs Minisforum mini PC?

Apple lists the M4 Mac mini at about 4W idle and 65W max, and hasn't published M6 figures yet. The Minisforum MS-01 uses laptop-class Intel Core i9 and i5 chips that draw more at idle and much more under load. For a 24/7 home server, the Mac mini costs less to keep on, but the difference is small next to the purchase price.
