What the iPhone Duo Gets Right
It's the first iPhone that actually multitasks
The headline software feature isn't a gimmick. iOS 27.1 on the Duo runs two apps side by side, opens two Safari windows at once, and lets you save app pairs you reopen together. That's the thing iPad users have had for a decade and iPhone users never got. Reading a PDF while replying in Slack, or keeping Maps open next to Messages, is the everyday case where a foldable earns its price.
Apple fixed the durability problems other foldables shipped with
IP68 water and dust resistance, a titanium frame and hinge, and Ceramic Shield on both sides make the Duo the toughest foldable on paper. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is still IP48, which means real protection against water but very little against dust, the thing that has historically killed foldable hinges.
The outer screen is a normal phone screen
At 5.4 inches, the cover display is usable for everything you'd do one-handed. Early foldables had narrow, cramped cover screens that pushed you to open the device constantly. Apple's is closer to an iPhone mini, which is a good problem to have.
What You Give Up for $1,999
Weight. At 254 grams, the Duo is 53 grams heavier than the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and heavier than any iPhone Pro Max. You'll feel it in a jacket pocket.
Thickness. 11.3mm closed is thick next to Samsung's 9.7mm. Apple chose durability and battery over thinness this time.
A real telephoto lens. The Duo has two 48MP cameras and uses a 2x crop from the main sensor. The iPhone 18 Pro has a dedicated telephoto, and it also gets Apple's first variable-aperture main camera. If zoom photos matter, the Pro is the better camera by a clear margin.
Battery headroom. Apple quotes up to 24 hours of mixed use on both displays. That's respectable for a foldable, but the iPhone 18 Pro is rated for 36 hours of video playback and the Pro Max for 45. A big bright inner screen costs power.
