Is ChatGPT Plus Worth It in 2026? Free vs Go vs Plus vs Pro

Our verdict: yes, if you use ChatGPT most days. Plus at $20 a month swaps the free Luna model for GPT-6 Sol with thinking, removes ads and unlocks GPT-6 Astra in ChatGPT Work and Codex. If you chat a few times a week, stay free. Skip Go: it costs $8, runs the same model as Free and can show ads.

GPT-6 changed the math. The free plan now gets GPT-6 Luna and the new Intelligent UI, so it's better than it has ever been. At the same time, OpenAI put ads on the free and $8 plans and kept the real GPT-6 behind Plus. Here's what each plan buys you.

What $20 actually buys

The biggest upgrade is the model. Free and Go run Luna, which scores 38 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index; Plus runs Sol, and GPT-6.1 Sol scores 52, one point behind OpenAI's flagship. That gap shows up on anything harder than a quick question: long documents, math, code and multi-step plans.

Plus also gets thinking (Medium and High), GPT-6 Astra inside agent-style tools like ChatGPT Work and Codex, projects, scheduled tasks and no ads. What it doesn't get is the Extra High and Pro thinking levels.

Using custom GPTs? They're on Plus today, but OpenAI retires custom GPTs on every plan on December 11, 2026. Don't pay for Plus just to keep one. Read Custom GPTs retired for what replaces them.

The ads on Free and Go

On October 21, OpenAI expanded ChatGPT ads to 26 more countries, 89 in total, with more than 100,000 advertisers. Ads appear only on Free and Go; Plus, Pro and Enterprise stay ad-free.

That makes Go a strange deal. You pay $8 for higher limits on the same Luna model and can still see ads. For $12 more, Plus gets a far stronger model and no ads.

When Pro is worth it

Pro starts at $100 and adds GPT-6 Pro, which runs on Astra, plus OpenAI's always-on agent Dot and unlimited image creation. Even Pro has weekly limits on GPT-6 Pro, and new $200 subscribers get a smaller allowance than people who joined before September 29.

Pay for Pro only if you hit Plus limits every week or need Astra's top setting for research or code. For a full breakdown, see ChatGPT Pro vs Claude Max.

FAQ
