Compare AI in 2026: Claude vs ChatGPT vs Gemini vs Grok vs DeepSeek vs Mistral

Our verdict: ChatGPT is the best all-rounder, and Claude is the best for coding and writing. Gemini wins research inside Google's apps, DeepSeek is the cheapest serious API, Mistral is the best European and open-model option, and Grok is a specialist pick for live X content.

Six AI families matter in 2026, and the main paid plans all cost about $20 a month. So the real question isn't price. It's which one is best at the job you do most.

ChatGPT: the best all-rounder

ChatGPT is the safest single answer if your week mixes research, writing, slides, images and some code. It isn't always the best at the hardest coding task, but it's the easiest app to make a daily habit.

Use ChatGPT for everyday work, Cursor for code, and add API keys only when you automate something or ship a product. Go at $8 a month is a cheaper step up, but it may show ads.

Claude: best for coding and writing

Claude is where we'd send developers first. Its output follows the exact shape of the request and keeps a large project coherent, rather than just producing pieces that work on their own.

Pro at $20 includes Claude Code, the terminal agent that runs real repo work. Writers get the most natural prose of the group. API use is billed separately.

Gemini: best for research

Gemini makes the most sense when your work already runs through Gmail, Docs, Drive and Google Cloud. The value is less the model than how it sits inside apps you already use.

It's also the best no-pay setup: the app is free, and the API's free tier in Google AI Studio includes Gemini 3.8 Flash. Antigravity is the Gemini-first coding environment.

Don't pay twice: a $20 app plan doesn't include API access. Buy the subscription for your own daily use, and add API keys only when you have software or automations that need them.

Grok: a specialist pick

Grok is the easiest one here to overbuy because it's fun. Since October 12 it's sold through The X Subscription: Plus at $8 a month, or Premium at $30, which bundles SuperGrok, Cursor Pro and X Premium+.

That makes sense if you want Grok, Cursor and X anyway. We wouldn't make it the default for most people.

DeepSeek: the cheapest serious API

DeepSeek is where you go when you watch API bills. V4.1 Flash costs $0.30 per million input tokens and $1.20 per million output at peak, and half that off-peak.

Put it behind internal tools, agent loops and automations, and let it win on cost. Don't ask it to be a premium daily assistant.

Mistral: the European option

Mistral is the serious alternative if you'd rather not default to the big three. The Mistral Vibe app, formerly Le Chat, has a free plan, and Pro costs $14.99 a month.

It's a strong fit when open models, European hosting or price discipline matter more than mainstream mindshare.

What about Cursor, Zed and Antigravity?

For coding, the editor matters almost as much as the model. Cursor is the most polished all-in-one editor and works with OpenAI, Claude, Gemini and Grok. Zed suits people who bring their own keys for Claude, DeepSeek or Mistral. Antigravity is the pick for Gemini-first teams.

FAQ

Which AI is the best overall in 2026?

There's no single best. Claude wins coding and long-context analysis. ChatGPT wins multimodal output and breadth. Gemini wins research and Google Workspace integration. Grok wins real-time X context. DeepSeek and Mistral win on cost per token for API-first workflows. Pick by use case, not by name.

Which AI is cheapest in 2026?

Free tiers of Gemini, ChatGPT and Claude all cover light daily use. The main paid tiers are ChatGPT Plus at $20/month, Claude Pro at $20/month and Google AI Pro at $19.99/month, with cheaper entry plans like Google AI Plus at $4.99 and ChatGPT Go at $8. For API pricing, DeepSeek V4.1 Flash is the cheapest serious option, at $0.30 input and $1.20 output per 1M tokens at peak and half that off-peak.

Which AI is best for coding?

Claude Sonnet 5.5 and Opus 5.5 are the strongest production-coding models in 2026, especially for long-context refactors and agentic work in Claude Code. OpenAI's GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra are competitive on reasoning-heavy debugging, so many serious coders keep one as primary and the other as a fallback.

Which AI is best for writing and brainstorming?

Claude has the strongest reputation for nuanced, less-robotic prose. ChatGPT is faster at structured outputs and brainstorming variations. Gemini fits best if your writing lives in Google Docs. For pure writing quality, Claude Pro at $20/month is the highest-value pick.

Which AI has the best free tier?

Gemini is the most generous of the major providers in 2026. The Gemini app has a free tier, and the Gemini API's free tier in Google AI Studio includes Gemini 3.8 Flash at no charge. ChatGPT and Claude free tiers are usable but more rate-limited.
