Our verdict: wait until October 28. Apple has invited press to a "Pro and Tell" event that day, and Bloomberg reports new MacBook Pros, including an OLED touchscreen redesign. Waiting three days costs nothing. After that, most buyers should get the M6 model, while M5 Pro owners have little reason to upgrade.
The M6 chip is already real: Apple announced it on August 25 and put it in the Mac mini. What's missing is a MacBook Pro to go with it. Here's what Apple has confirmed, what the reports say, and who should buy what.

M6 vs M5 in numbers
Apple says M6 is up to 1.2 times faster than M5 on multithreaded CPU work, with nearly 30% more peak GPU AI compute and 10% more memory bandwidth. That's a smaller jump than M5 made over M4, when Apple claimed up to 3.5 times the AI performance.
So for most people the reason to wait isn't the chip. It's the rumored OLED screen, touch support and thinner body, plus the chance that Apple reshuffles prices.
Today's MacBook Pro prices
US starting prices on apple.com, checked October 25, 2026. Apple raised Mac prices in June, citing memory costs, so these are higher than at launch.
| Model | Chip | Base memory and storage | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 14-inch | M5 | 16GB, 1TB | $1,999 |
| 14-inch | M5 Pro | 24GB, 1TB | $2,499 |
| 14-inch | M5 Max | 36GB, 2TB | $4,099 |
| 16-inch | M5 Pro | 24GB, 1TB | $2,999 |
| 16-inch | M5 Max | 36GB, 2TB | $4,399 |
What the OLED MacBook Pro will likely cost
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says the OLED models will carry a "significantly higher" price. 9to5Mac estimates $2,999 for the 14-inch and $3,499 for the 16-inch, and expects today's mini-LED M5 Pro and Max models to stay on sale. An analyst at Omdia says mini-LED MacBook Pro screens stay in production through 2028.
If that's right, you'd pay about $500 more for the same M5 Pro chip in a nicer body. Worth it if you want touch and OLED; not if you just want speed.
Should you wait?
The verdict
Don't buy a MacBook Pro this weekend: Apple's October 28 event is three days away. Base-model buyers should wait for the M6 version, Pro and Max buyers can keep today's mini-LED models unless they want OLED and touch, and M5 owners can skip this generation. FAQ
When is the M6 MacBook Pro coming out?
Apple hasn't announced it. Bloomberg reports new MacBook Pros on or around October 27, 2026, and Apple has invited press to a "Pro and Tell" event on October 28 without naming products. Reports point to shipping around November 6.
Is the M6 chip out?
Yes. Apple announced M6 on August 25, 2026, as its first 2-nanometer chip, with a 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU and up to 32GB of memory. So far it only ships in the Mac mini, from $899.
Will the OLED MacBook Pro have M6?
Reportedly not. Bloomberg says there will be no M6 Pro or M6 Max, so the OLED touchscreen models would keep M5 Pro and M5 Max. A 14-inch model with the base M6 chip is expected to replace the current M5 model in today's design.
How much faster is M6 than M5?
Apple says up to 1.2 times faster multithreaded CPU performance, nearly 30% more peak GPU AI compute and 10% more memory bandwidth (170GB/s versus 153GB/s). That's a modest step; the bigger rumored change is the OLED design.
How much will the OLED MacBook Pro cost?
Apple hasn't said. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports a "significantly higher" price, and 9to5Mac estimates $2,999 for the 14-inch and $3,499 for the 16-inch. Today's 14-inch M5 Pro starts at $2,499.
