HeyGen vs Synthesia 2026: Best AI Avatar Video Tool

AI avatar tools turn a script into a video of a person talking, with no camera or reshoots. Pick a stock presenter or your own digital twin and you get a spokesperson video in minutes, often translated with matching lip movement.

Our verdict: HeyGen is the best AI avatar video tool for most people in 2026. It has the most languages (175+), the longest videos on self-serve plans (30 minutes), a free custom avatar and a pay-as-you-go API with no subscription. Synthesia is the better pick for large companies that need SCORM, brand kits and SSO, but those sit on its Enterprise plan.

HeyGen: the best all-rounder

The free plan gives you 3 videos a month up to a minute long, access to its Avatar IV engine and one custom video avatar, so you can build your own digital twin before paying anything. Creator, at $29 a month or $24 billed yearly, raises videos to 30 minutes, adds 1080p export, voice cloning, unlimited photo avatars, watermark removal and 175+ languages and dialects.

Pro starts at $49 a month for 1,000 credits, adds 4K export and lets you edit and proofread translation scripts, and scales up to 100,000 credits for $4,300 a month. Business is $149 a month plus $20 per seat, with 1,500 credits, 60-minute videos, 5 custom avatars, SAML/SSO, SCORM export and LMS integrations.

The API is the other big draw. It's pay-as-you-go and separate from the web plans, so even free users can buy credits. HeyGen's help center lists a digital twin on its Avatar III engine at $0.60 a minute, Avatar IV at $4.83 a minute and Avatar V at $7.20 a minute. Lip-sync video translation starts at $0.81 a minute.

Cloning is gated by consent. Every video-based digital twin needs a short consent video read by the person in the footage, recorded at the same time as the avatar footage. A colleague being cloned records it themselves.

The catch: HeyGen doesn't publish how many credits a minute of web-app video costs. It says usage varies by AI model, length and complexity, so it's hard to know exactly how many minutes 600 credits buys until you start generating.

Synthesia: built for corporate training

Synthesia sells itself to big companies and says it's trusted by over 90% of the Fortune 100. The self-serve plans are cheaper than HeyGen's on paper. Basic is free with 10 minutes of video a month and a watermark. Starter is $19 a month or $14 billed yearly, adding about 150 minutes of video a year and 3 personal avatars. Pro is $89 a month or $59 billed yearly, with about 720 minutes a year, 5 personal avatars, interactive videos and branded video pages.

Synthesia is clearer than HeyGen about what credits buy: a finished minute uses about 100 credits, more if the avatar is on screen the whole time. It supports 140+ languages and voices, and AI dubbing covers 70+ languages on self-serve plans and 140+ on Enterprise. Studio avatars, filmed professionally, are a $1,000-a-year add-on.

Personal avatars need a live consent recording to verify identity, and it can't be uploaded. The person in the consent video must be the person in the avatar footage.

The catch: the features that make Synthesia the enterprise pick, including SCORM export, brand kits, SAML/SSO and 1-click translation, are all on the custom-priced Enterprise plan. Starter and Pro are good video tools, not full training platforms.

Colossyan: the best value for L&D teams

Colossyan chases Synthesia's training buyers but gives more away. Its free Starter plan includes 20 minutes a month on its NEO engine, every stock avatar in a 300+ library, 15 custom avatars, 3 cloned voices, brand kits and 15 auto translations a month.

Professional is $59 a month billed yearly, plus $30 a month per extra editor. It adds 30 minutes a month on NEO and 10 minutes on the newer NEO2 engine, watermark removal, 5 SCORM exports a month, 20 custom avatars and API access capped at 360 minutes a year. It supports 120+ languages. Enterprise adds unlimited minutes, SSO and EU or US data residency.

The catch: minutes are tight. Thirty minutes a month won't cover a full course library, they don't roll over, and the free plan carries a watermark. Studio avatars are a $1,000-a-year add-on, the same as Synthesia.

D-ID: cheapest entry and a simple API

D-ID is the cheapest way into avatar video. Lite is $5.90 a month or $4.70 billed yearly for 10 minutes a month, with a D-ID watermark and a personal-use license. Pro, at $29 a month or $16 billed yearly, gives 15 minutes, 3 personal avatars, a voice clone and a commercial license. Advanced is $196 a month or $108 billed yearly for 100 minutes, 5 personal avatars and your own logo.

Developers get dedicated API plans: Build at $14.40 a month billed yearly for up to 16 minutes of video, Launch at $35 for up to 45 minutes, and Scale at $138.60 for up to 200 minutes. Its V3 instant avatars require a consent video in which the subject reads a script with a passcode, and the challenge expires after 30 minutes.

The catch: Pro still carries an "AI watermark," and only Advanced and above let you swap in your own logo. Minutes don't roll over, and each video is rounded up to the nearest 15 seconds.

What about Captions and Hedra?

Captions is a better fit for social creators than HeyGen or Synthesia. It's an AI video editor first, with avatars and digital twins, auto-captions, translation and formats for ads and UGC-style clips. Hedra builds its own visual generation models, with an agent for image, video and audio work and an API for developers, which suits creators who want expressive characters more than a corporate presenter.

If you want cinematic footage rather than a talking presenter, avatar tools are the wrong category. For those, look at a general AI video generator instead.

The verdict

HeyGen is the best AI avatar video tool for most people in 2026. It does the most on self-serve plans: 175+ languages, 30-minute videos, a free custom avatar, SCORM on Business at a published price and an API you can use without a subscription.

Choose Synthesia if you're a large company that needs an enterprise contract, with SCORM, brand kits and SSO in one place. Choose Colossyan if you run training on a small budget, and D-ID if you want the cheapest plan or a fixed-price API.
