Best Voice to Text Apps 2026: Wispr Flow vs Superwhisper vs Aqua

Most people speak about three times faster than they type. The new wave of dictation apps finally makes that useful: they remove the "ums," fix punctuation, catch you changing your mind mid-sentence and format the result for wherever your cursor is, whether that's Slack, an email or a prompt to Claude Code. The difference from built-in dictation is big enough that many developers and writers now talk to their computers all day.

Our verdict: Wispr Flow is the best voice-to-text app for most people in 2026. It works on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android, the cleanup is the most polished, and its coding features understand file names and variables in Cursor. Superwhisper is the best pick if privacy comes first: it runs Whisper on your own Mac with unlimited free local dictation, while Wispr Flow always transcribes in the cloud.

Wispr Flow: the most polished dictation anywhere

Wispr Flow is the app that made AI dictation mainstream, and it's still the most refined. Hold a key, talk, and clean text appears in whatever app you're using. It removes filler words, adds punctuation and handles corrections the way a person would: say "let's meet at 5, actually 6," and it writes "let's meet at 6." It adapts its tone to the app, so Slack gets casual text and email gets full sentences, and it learns your words through a personal dictionary and saved snippets.

For developers, it's the strongest. In Cursor and Windsurf you can say "at authCheck.ts" to tag a file, and it recognizes camelCase and snake_case variables and command-line commands. Variable recognition needs the editor's Screen Reader Optimized setting turned on.

The free plan gives 2,000 words a week on desktop and 1,000 on mobile, enough for a fair trial. Pro is $12 a month billed yearly or $15 monthly. It has SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA and ISO 27001 certifications, and using your data to train its models is opt-in.

The catch: all transcription happens in the cloud. Its optional Context Awareness feature reads text from the app you're using to improve accuracy. If you dictate anything sensitive, turn that off or choose Superwhisper.

Superwhisper: the best for privacy

Superwhisper runs OpenAI's Whisper speech model on your own computer, so your voice never has to leave it, and the free plan includes unlimited local dictation. It works best on Apple Silicon Macs, and it's now on Windows, iOS and Android too.

Pro, at $8.49 a month, $84.99 a year or $249.99 for lifetime access, adds AI modes that rewrite your speech as a message, an email or formal text, using either a local model or a cloud model you choose, including Claude, GPT and Gemini. Pro also lets you plug in your own API keys. It works with Cursor, Claude Code and Codex, and has a command-line tool.

The catch: more settings and more choices mean more setup than Wispr Flow, and local models are only fast on a recent Mac.

Aqua Voice: the best value for voice coding

Aqua Voice is built around talking to AI coding tools. It's pitched directly at people dictating prompts into Claude Code, Codex and Cursor, and it offers an MCP server, a command-line tool and an API. It uses its own speech model, called Avalon, and supports 49 languages.

Pro is $8 a month billed yearly or $10 monthly, with unlimited words, the cheapest unlimited plan here. Max, at $24 a month billed yearly, adds a real-time mode and a voice command to send what you've dictated. The free plan is just 1,000 words, so it's a short trial.

The catch: Aqua's accuracy claims come from a benchmark it made itself, and it doesn't clearly say whether transcription happens on your device or in the cloud. Its Privacy Mode keeps nothing on its servers.

Willow: a strong Wispr Flow alternative

Willow does most of what Wispr Flow does, including filler removal, formatting, style matching and an auto-learning dictionary, at the same $12 a month billed yearly. Its free plan includes unlimited use of its basic model, and it has an offline mode. It's on Mac, Windows and iPhone, with Android listed as coming soon. Business and Enterprise plans enforce zero data retention.

MacWhisper: for recordings, not live typing

MacWhisper is mainly a transcription app for audio and video files, like interviews, meetings and podcasts, and it runs entirely on your Mac using Whisper and Parakeet models. It added system-wide dictation, but that's not its strength. The Pro upgrade is €64 once with lifetime updates, a better deal than a subscription if transcribing files is what you need.

What about the free built-in options?

Apple Dictation on macOS 27 has no time limit, adds punctuation automatically and can run on-device. With Apple Intelligence on recent iPhones and Macs, it's more accurate than ever. Windows voice typing (Win+H) supports about 50 languages and voice commands, and on Copilot+ PCs its fluid dictation removes filler words in English.

Both are worth trying before you pay. What they lack is the cleanup layer: the paid apps rewrite rambling speech into finished text, adapt to each app and learn your vocabulary. Dragon, once the standard, is now Windows-only, hasn't had a Mac version since 2018, and Microsoft's focus has moved to healthcare. We don't recommend starting with it in 2026.

The verdict

Wispr Flow is the best voice-to-text app for most people in 2026. It's on every platform, its cleanup is the most natural, and its coding features are the most complete.

Choose Superwhisper if your words should stay on your device. Choose Aqua Voice if you mostly dictate prompts to AI coding agents and want unlimited words for $8 a month, and MacWhisper if you transcribe recordings. If you're comparing AI tools more broadly, our best AI subscription verdict covers the assistants these apps talk to.
